A confissão ("The Confession") is a novel full of suspense and surprising turns, mingling crime and mystery with a beautiful love story. The narrator, whose profession is stealing books, has kidnapped a woman, and in an abandoned beach house he tells her a riveting story of love and fear. In his search for identity, he discovers that he possesses a gift that is at once a blessing and a curse: He is a modern vampire, thriving not on blood but on memories. Whenever he sleeps with a woman she is doomed to die, while he inherits her knowledge and makes it his own. Trying to prevent new deaths, he flees from Rio de Janeiro to a small village in China. But not even there is he able to find peace. After years of travelling the world, he finally decides to return home. Gradually, he reveals the role his victim has played in this strange entanglement - and is yet to play.

In elegant and fluid language, Flávio Carneiro paints a vivid and engaging character. While reality and fantasy merge almost imperceptibly, the narrator is not portrayed as the vile monster once associated with vampires, but alternately as a charismatic man with extraordinary talents and a dark villain. At the end, both the reader and the victim will have to surrender to him.

In A Ilha (“The Island”), the inhabitants of a remote island decipher a series of mysterious messages that arrive in bottles. Gradually, they become aware that they have been manipulated and are facing their own demise. In his captivating new novel, Flávio Carneiro cleverly combines elements of adventure literature and science fiction.
