Luiz Eduardo Soares, a prominent anthropologist with a PhD in Political
Science, is currently Secretary of Life Valuation and Crime Prevention in an
important suburb of Rio de Janeiro, and is an university teacher as well. He
has 11 books to his credit, including the best-seller Cabeça de porco (Pig Head). André Batista is a police captain
in Rio de Janeiro. He served at the Elite Squad BOPE between 1996 and 2001, and
also graduated as a lawyer. Rodrigo Pimentel spent several years as a
policeman, including a five-year span at BOPE between 1995 and 2000. He
co-produced Bus 174 and currently
works as a security consultant.
Elite da
Tropa (The Elite Squad) reveals, for the first time
and viewed from the inside, the strenous training and dramatic day-to-day life
of the men sent to fight at the forefront of the guerrilla warfare against drug
lords in the slums of Rio. It is a compelling fictional account based on the
actual experiences of the writers, where the reader can hear the voice of the
policeman himself and follow his daily struggles while serving as a killing
machine whose only logic is war.
Elite da
Tropa stems from the same material behind violent and
controversial film by director José Padilha, which premiered at Rio’s Int’l
Film Festival. After the film was distributed troughout Brazil in thousands of
pirate copies following a leak in the editing room, the Special Police Force of
Rio de Janeiro unsuccessfully tried to prevent its national release, which only
boosted its popularity.
The film Tropa
da Elite has been awarded the GOLDEN
BEAR at the International Film Festival BERLINALE Film Festival 2008. Walter Moura,
starring as Captain Nascimento, participates as well in Tropa de Elite 2, which has been nominated by Brazil as
its entry for the category Best Foreign
Movie at the Oscar 2012. The winner will be announced on 26
February 2012.
Elite da
Tropa 2 (“The Elite Squad 2”) revisits themes and characters
from Elite da Tropa (“The Elite Squad”) as well as from the homonymous
film from 2007, fictionally narrating the contemporary story of Rio de
Janeiro’s milícias, which are formed by policemen, act as the mob and elect
politicians. Besides the Police backstage, the plot shows the ambiguous role
loyalty plays in human acts and emotions, defying other values and beliefs.
