Vlady Kociancich, born in Buenos Aires in
1941, has written numerous novels and short story collections and won various
literary awards, including the Jorge Luis Borges Prize. Kociancich
studied literature and Old English with Borges. Her latest novel Cuadro de una muerte
dudosa has just been published in Argentina.
Juan Turner, a Buenos Aires
lawyer, has withdrawn to a small village where he hopes to atone for a personal
mistake as a Justice of the Peace.
One day he has to tackle
the assumed suicide of a guest of the nearby spa hotel – a legendary castle
that was once built by the Jewish refugee Shomberg and is now run by his son
Martín. Also, attractive Miranda Wilde tells him about a mysterious vanished
corpse in the castle grounds.
For Juan Turner, the
envolvement in these cases also means reconciliation with his own past. And
there even seems to be a future for him, in which Miranda Wilde plays not too
small a role...
Written with a light hand, Cuadro
de una muerte dudosa (“Portrait of a Dubious Death”) plays with the genres of
the crime and action novel and the contrast between the city and the
countryside. Using striking images and an unobtrusive style, Kociancich
presents her characters’ personal stories and the almost mystical atmosphere in
the remote village, only torn out of its lethargy by the fascinating legend of
the mysterious castle and the gruesome crimes.
